Swallow a toad in the morning and you will encounter nothing more disgusting the rest of the day - Nicolas Chamfort

Swallowing Exercises

Here are a number of exercises that I was given by a Speech Therapist to try and help me with my swallowing difficulties.

Effortful Swallow

This exercise involves trying to swallow food or saliva as hard as you can. Keep the tongue pressed against the roof of the mouth whilst swallowing. Try to do this five times.

Masako Exercise

Stick out your tongue and swallow. It is important to try and keep your tongue still and beyond your teeth or lips. Try to repeat this exercise five times.

Mendelsohn Exercise

Place a couple of fingers lightly on top of the bulge at the front of your throat. This is sometimes called the Adam’s Apple, particularly in men. Swallow and feel the bulge lift and then lower. The exercise is to swallow and hold the bulge in the up position for 3 or 4 seconds before letting it drop. Repeat five times.

Pitch Glides

Make an 'ee' sound starting with the lowest pitch you can manage and slowly raise the pitch to the highest you can achieve. This should take about 15-20 seconds. Repeat 5 times.

Stretch Exercise

Open your mouth and tilt your head back. Push your jaw forward then close your mouth raising your jaw to do so. You should feel a stretch in the front of your neck. Hold this position for five seconds.

Surpraglottic Swallow

Take a deep breath in and then swallow while holding your breath. After swallowing immediately cough to release the air quickly. Repeat this exercise five times.

Tongue Exercises

Open your mouth wide and stick your tongue. Hold for five seconds.

Stick your tongue out to the right side of the mouth and hold for five seconds. Repeat on the right side of the mouth.

Lift your tongue to the top of the mouth and hold for five seconds

Pull your tongue back in your mouth and hold for five seconds.

Repeat five times.
