After a couple of nights at home my sunburn was healing well. More importantly, my son was on steroids again and they had worked like magic taking away his swollen and painful joints. So I had time to reflect on my failed attempt. I had done a bit from Land's End so maybe I could just go and do a bit to John O'Groats. Just go up on my own taking everything I would need to be self-sufficient for the trip. So having booked a couple of hotels and a campsite I bought a train ticket and my all important bike ticket to Glasgow and set off a couple of days later.
I somehow managed to get a first class rail ticket for less than an ordinary ticket. So having stored my bike and dismantled my trailer on an early morning train at Euston I sat in my lycra in first class for the journey up to Scotland.
I planned my journey between Glasgow and John O'Groats over four days: Day One Train to Glasgow and then cycle to Luss on Loch Lomond. Day Two to Fort William. Day Three to Inverness and Day Four to John O'Groats and then back to Wick train station.
Arriving at Glasgow Central and having reassembled my trailer (trailers are not permitted on trains) and retrieved my bike I was ready to set off. It must of been around 5pm and my first challenge was working out which way to set off. I did have a bike sat-nav but it took quite a while for it to acquire a signal and calculate a route. Eventually I found myself heading west out of the city along roads and paths by the River Clyde towards Dunbarton. Reaching Dunbarton I then headed north until I reached Loch Lomond. There I headed around the west shore to Luss. My accomodation for the night was a pub/hotel. I checked in, changed quickly and had a meal. I then went in search of a phone signal or a public phone box to ring home. It was still quite light even though it was past 10pm.
